All workshops take place at the TAIS Studio (60 Atlantic Ave.) with a maximum of 8 participants unless otherwise noted. Sign up quickly to avoid disappointment.
This workshop will be an introduction to different types of stop-motion puppets, such as wire and ball-and-joint. It will cover face types, such as mouth replacement, opening and closing style, as well as tie-down types, magnetic and screw tie-downs. Participants will be able to make a wire armature from scratch with tie downs. Professionally-made puppet examples will be available for reference. All materials will be provided by TAIS. Philip is also happy to brain storm and problem solve puppets you might have in mind. Student are encouraged to forward questions ahead of time so that the class can focus on their needs.
Philip Eddolls was a stop motion Director making commercials with Resistor Art and Design in Toronto. Most recently he directed an animation for Weird Al through ACME Film Works in LA. He has directed at the NFB in Montreal, and worked as an Animator at Cuppa Coffee Studios for last 3 years.
Scanning and Digital Painting Workshop with Sonya Carey

This workshop is an introduction to working in animation digitally. Participants will be able to translate their works from paper to the digital world through the basics of scanning and digital painting. The software that will be used is Toon Boom.
Sonya Carey is a graduate of the University of Guelph from the Drama and Technical Theatre program. Carey has worked in digital ink and paint and final composite in the animation industry for over 15 years for series such as “Ren and Stimpy”, “Beavis and Butt Head”, “Bob and Margaret”, and “Stickin’ Around”. Most recently, Carey worked on Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” and "Winnie the Pooh".
This workshop will be introduction to the world of stop-motion stereography, including instruction on the IOTA 3D Slider to work with Dragon Stop Motion software. Basic principles of stereography, the pitfalls of 3D stop-motion, and a scene analysis of “Coraline” will be covered.
Evan DeRushie is a stop-motion animator and director from Toronto, Ontario. He has animated on numerous award winning TV series at Cuppa Coffee Studios, including Life's a Zoo and Nickelodeon's Glenn Martin DDS. Recently he animated a stereoscopic stop-motion film for the NFB about the life of a sea turtle. He is currently directing and animating an original children's fable called "The Fox & the Chickadee," to be released in spring 2012. More information at: www.evanderushie.com
